Review: Insurgent - Veronica Roth

Release Date: May 1st, 2012
Hardcover: 525 pages
Publisher: HarperTeen

One choice can transform you—or it can destroy you. But every choice has consequences, and as unrest surges in the factions all around her, Tris Prior must continue trying to save those she loves—and herself—while grappling with haunting questions of grief and forgiveness, identity and loyalty, politics and love.

Tris's initiation day should have been marked by celebration and victory with her chosen faction; instead, the day ended with unspeakable horrors. War now looms as conflict between the factions and their ideologies grows. And in times of war, sides must be chosen, secrets will emerge, and choices will become even more irrevocable—and even more powerful. Transformed by her own decisions but also by haunting grief and guilt, radical new discoveries, and shifting relationships, Tris must fully embrace her Divergence, even if she does not know what she may lose by doing so.

I don't know why but I always have a harder time writing reviews on books that I absolutely loved. I read Insurgent the day that it came out and yet I have been procrastinating to start writing the review. To summarize my feelings: Insurgent was utterly unbelievably and incredibly amazing.

I'm sure most of you have already read Insurgent by now but I won't write anything about the plot itself in case some of you haven't read it yet (what are you waiting for?!). But I can say that Roth did a wonderful job keeping the sequel as interesting and captivating as Divergent. There were so many twists and turns and so many different emotions being put in the foreground that, really, Insurgent wasn't boring, at all. Even though sometimes I got mad because there was this big secret that everybody would mention but we would never find anything about it but I guess that's what keeps us hooked, right?!

By far, in my opinion, the best part about Insurgent were the characters. Tris and Four's relationship was just so realistic. It wasn't anything like I expected it to be: boring. Nevertheless I found Tris a bit strange in this novel. She is one of my favorite main characters, ever, but she was a bit aggressive and mean in Insurgent. But somehow I understand why she reacts that way. Four is still the swoon-worthy guy we met in the prequel. And of course some new characters are introduced and well, I liked them all! They bring some new spice to this series.

The ending was something completely surprising and fantastic, meaning: please release the third novel now?! Insurgent only made me more sure that this trilogy will certainly stay forever in my favorite bookshelf! If you haven't read this novel yet (which is kind of unbelievable), do it for your own good!

Veronica Roth is a twenty-two-year-old debut author and a recent graduate of Northwestern University's creative writing program. While a student, she often chose to work on the story that would become  Divergent  instead of doing her homework. Now a full-time writer, she lives near Chicago. Blog / Twitter

  2. I completely agree with you about Tris in Insurgent -- I just didn't get her! unfortunately I didn't like Insurgent as much as Divergent -- I hope the 3rd one doesn't disappoint!
